As the year 2020 lingers, drawing closer to Christmas, we thought it would be great to do something enjoyable for the little ones.

At Ballarat Regional Multicultural Council (BRMC), everything that is done is about inclusion, diversity, multiculturalism and education. There are always different programs being facilitated to help the Ballarat community with keeping active, gaining more knowledge, and creating new networks. With each Community Board Member focusing on projects that are important and necessary for the community of Ballarat, a project suitable for the little ones was drafted, polished, and bought to life. To include younger children in our community, it is important that we have programs that allow them to learn, keep active and socialise at the same time. In this case, Miniroos soccer appeared to be a project that is suitable for children that are normally left out.

With most activities focusing on the group of 12 to 25 year old’s or older, Miniroos Soccer draws the line at the lower age group. Researched and planned by BRMC and Football Victoria, the program targets younger children in the 5 to 12 year old bracket. Miniroos Soccer is designed to get the kids active, but mostly to help them learn and create networks. We first kicked off on 28th November 2020, with a second session that took place on 5th December 2020. The program has 4 sessions in total that will be conducted in the interest of the younger kids and their family members.

The first BRMC Miniroos Soccer on 28th November had attendance from 11 children with family members watching from the fence or participating in the activities. With the success of the first day, it is safe to say that the children truly enjoyed themselves as we saw an increase in the number of attendees for the second session on 5th December. The first session fell on a day that was full of sunshine and warmth and allowed the kids to be comfortable, play easily and laugh. The program brought out everyone’s different interest toward the different activities that were conducted. It also brought out each person’s way of being supportive towards their team players.

The second session did not quite work out due to Ballarat’s four season weather in a day. With the day starting off with strong winds that made impossible for the children to keep the soccer balls at the feet, it was topped off by heavy rain. With just half an hour into the program, the parents understood it impossible to run a program in such weather for the sake of everyone’s well-being.

The sessions are programmed for Saturdays so that they do not clash with school days. All children from the age of 5 to 12 are welcome to attend. Parents are strongly encouraged to come along with their kids and register them on the spot. Due to COVID-19 regulations we are also collecting electronic details of all attendees.

Next sessions:

  • Saturday 12th December at 1pm
  • Saturday 19th December at 1pm

Where: Ballarat Regional Soccer Facility (Morshead Park), 900 Pleasant St South, Redan
